Against all odds

It's been almost two years since my last post on my blog. Coincidentally, or maybe not, my last post, announced that the Nokia N900 had started to ship. I come back to write now to celebrate the launch of the N9, the last product from the Maemo/MeeGo group in Nokia.

Phil Collins will forgive me if I borrow the title of his song for this post, but this is exactly the feeling I have in these days. The N9 had to survive the earthquake of the 11th of February, the tsunami that wiped out the MeeGo organization, outlived the plague of the many people who left the organization since that gloomy, fateful day, and yet it's (almost) there. Soon you'll be able to enjoy its inherent beauty, simplicity of use, experience a totally new user interaction model, and feel the pleasure to just hold it in your hands and look at it.

And like my colleague Urho, I feel immense sense of respect for all those people who contributed to make this happen. We have done nothing short of extraordinary under the circumstances, demonstrated a sense of commitment with no equals being able to pull this up till the end, and yet we built an amazing jewel.

I feel immense pride to be part of this group, a group that managed to hold on and build something that so many people have admired on its launch day, and hopefully even more will soon enjoy in their everyday use.

I want to thank all those who contributed to make this, nothing short of a dream, come true. Thank you also to those that have decided to leave Nokia but contributed to the N9 work: I'm nothing but sure that they all feel what I am feeling right now.

Enjoy, be proud and be focused for the last mile, and our celebration will be complete!

Nokia N900: tip and tricks/ Nokia N900, trucchi e segreti

Salve a tutti,

avevo promesso che avrei postato qualcuno dei trucchetti di cui è pieno l'N900, per permettervi di usarlo al meglio, eccovene quindi qualcuno. Iniziamo dalla vista principale (home view), e dal menu con il task switcher (da dove si può fare il multitasing fra applicazioni aperte), e da operazioni di gestione delle applicazioni in generale. A dopo per trucchi specifichi alle applicazioni:

• Home view: si può accedere alla modalità di personalizzazione o premendo sullo schermo e poi sull'icona in alto a destra o tenendo premuto a lungo sullo schermo
• Home view: si può ritornare velocemente alla home view dall'interno di qualsiasi applicazione tenendo premuto a lungo il tasto del menu (in alto a sinistra)
• Chiudere un applicazione con molti livelli di finestre annidate (esempio, lettore musicale in certi casi o email: tenendo premuto a lungo il tasto per tornare indietro di un livello, si ritorna alla main view dell'applicazione velocemente.
• Uso del power menu: premendo brevemente il tasto di accensione e spegnimento, verranno svelate molte funzioni interessanti. La mia preferita è il tasto telefono che permette di lanciare l'applicazione telefono da ogni posizione senza andarla a cercare dal menu (SI, questo non è un telefono con altre funzionalità, questo è un computer che ha anche la funzionalità di telefono!)
• BEST TRICK: premendo ctrl + backspace da qualsiasi punto si viene portati al task switcher. Ideale per un veloce multitasking
  
• BEST TRICK: iniziando a scrivere il nome di un contatto nella home view si invoca la rubrica filtrata per le lettere inserite. Ad esempio, scrivete "sim" e tutti i contatti che iniziano per sim verranno mostrati. Utilissimo per chiamare velocemente! Allo stesso modo, inserendo un numero, si invoca il tastierino per fare una chiamata.

Hello, as promised before, here are some tip and tricks that let you use your N900 at its best. Let's start from the home view, the task switcher and launcher, general window management operations and power key functions. Stay tuned for applications-specific tricks.

• Home view: you can access the edit mode either by tapping on the screen and then on the top right button, or by long tapping on the screen
• Home view: you can quickly access the home view from any open application by long tapping on the menu button (top left)
• When you have applications with several nested windows like media player or e-mail, you can come back quickly to the home view by long pressing the back arrow button on top right
• Power menu: short pressing the hw key will open a menu with several interesting functions. One of them is invoking the phone application from anywhere at once without need of doing it through menu or task switcher. Very fast! And remember: this is not a phone with added functionalities, this is a mobile computer with phone functionality! See the difference?
• BEST TRICK: from any open application, press ctrl + back space to invoke the task switcher and quickly access the other open applications. Multi-tasking at its best!
• BEST TRICK: from the home view, start typing the name of your contact and the phone book will get invoked with filtered search. E.g., typing "sim" will launch the address book filtered and showing only contacts starting with sim. Similarly, typing numbers from home view will invoke the dialpad.
  

Approvata in Finlandia la Lex Nokia

E' stata finalmente (nel senso di alla fine) approvata in Finlandia la cosidetta Lex Nokia, che ha infiammato per mesi il panorama politico finlandese, con innumerevoli articoli sull'argomento postati sull'edizione internazionale dell'HS, a chissa' quanti in finlandese.


La legge in pratica consente a datori di lavoro di monitorare le mail scambiate dai dipendenti con parti all'esterno, ed e' stata chiamata Lex Nokia perche' si dice che la Nokia abbia fatto un'intensa operazione di lobbying col governo per avere la legge approvata, memore di un caso passato in cui un furbone ha fatto trapelare segreti industriali Nokia ad un concorrente usando la mail aziendale...

Tanto era l'interesse di Nokia per questa legge, che si dice che addirittura la Nokia abbia minacciato di abbandonare la Finlandia se la legge non fosse stata approvata. E se cio' fosse accaduto, povera Finlandia, visto che la Nokia fa da sola un terzo del PIL della nazione.

Io sinceramente non capisco il perche' di tanto chiasso. Si possono monitorare solo i mittenti e destinatari della mail, e gli allegati. A parte che nessuno sano di mente farebbe trapelare segreti industriali usando la mail dell'azienda i cui segreti si vogliono trapelare, in Finlandia ci sono violazioni molto piu' grosse della privacy senza che nessuno batte ciglio.

Ho gia' bloggato piu' volte (link e link) sulla vergogna della Finlandia. Mentre ci si batte sulle ragioni della Lex Nokia, ci si permette di pubblicare, per motivi di rispetto della liberta' di stampa (!), informazioni dettagliate su nome cognome e ricavi dell'anno precedente di ogni cittadino finlandese! La pubblicazione avviene in appositi giornali, venduti al supermercato o in edicola come la guida TV, o addirittura (visto che siamo nel paese della Nokia) mandando via SMS nome cognome e municipalita' di residenza dello spiato ad un apposito numero e ricevendo indietro la cifra guadagnata l'anno precedente per la modica somma di 2€.

Di fronte a questo schifo, che controllino pure a chi mando la mia posta, tanto se vogliono farlo non hanno certo bisogno della legge...

Notare che in persino in Italia la Lex Nokia ha avuto risalto, con una notizia riportata dal Corriere.

Nokia N810 - The Internet you're used to, in places you're not

Ladies and gentlemen, now I can say it: my latest son is born. The Nokia N810 Internet Tablet has been launched!!!


I'll come back again to this, with more details, for now I give you a quick list of its features:

• Slide qwerty keyboard!
• Integrated GPS!
• SIP support to call and be called anywhere an Internet connection is available
• Mozilla browser with AJAX support
• Windows media format support

Signore e signori, ora si puo' dire: il mio ultimo figlio e' nato. L'Internet Tablet Nokia N810 e' stato lanciato.

Ritornero' dopo con piu' dettagli, per ora ecco una lista veloce delle sue caratteristiche:

Il quarto schermo/The fourth screen

In principio c'era uno schermo solo, usato da molti riuniti insieme per condividere emozioni e esperienze. Il cinema. Poi venne un secondo, che ci consenti' di unirci al resto del mondo, e persino anche ad altri mondi. La televisione.

Il terzo schermo cambio' il modo in cui viviamo e lavoriamo, Internet, la vera rivoluzione. Nonostante tutto, l'esperienza di Internet rimase ristretta a dei confini privati, fino a che non venne il quarto schermo, che cambio' tutto e per sempre. Internet puo' ora essere utilizzato dovunque e quando si vuole, Internet e' ora concentrato in un singolo dispositivo, che tutti possono utilizzare quando e dove vogliono, con chi vogliono. Il quarto schermo e' quello dei Nokia Multimedia Computers.

Cosi' inizia grosso modo la conferenza stampa con cui Nokia, il 29-08-2007 ha annunciato una drastica e storica rivoluzione, il suo passaggio da un'azienda che produce prevalentemente hardware, a un'azienda di servizi Internet, in diretta concorrenza con mostri sacri come Google o Yahoo. Non e' un cambio da poco, la portata e' simile a quando Nokia decise di abbandonare la produzione di cavi, legname o gomma per dedicarsi alle telecomunicazioni.

Nokia aprira' un proprio portale web, Ovi, che in finlandese significa appunto porta. Nome azzeccato, soprattutto se si pensa che non e' affatto facile trovare una parola finlandese piu' corta di 34 lettere, figuriamoci 3... Ovi sara' la porta a tutti i servizi internet che Nokia offrira'. Nel dettaglio, i primi che saranno disponibili saranno il Nokia Music Store, che permettera' di scaricare da una collezione di milioni di brani musica dovunque e comunque usando i dispositivi Nokia. Sincronizzazione con un apposito client per pc e altre aggiunte ovvia. Pensate che iTunes Store non consente (al momento) di far scaricare i propri brani direttamente all'iPod, ma bisogna usare iTunes...

Ovi offrira' anche un servizio di giochi, dove si potranno scaricare, ovviamente da un dispositivo Nokia dotato di apposito software Java, giochi per S60 firmati di aziende prestigiose (ad esempio, EA e il suo Fifa 2007), da provare, affittare o acquistare. In aggiunta, servizi addizionali come statistiche e classifiche online.

Che dire? La mia opinione e' che e' difficile entrare a questo livello in un business cosi' complesso come i servizi Internet, dove colossi come Apple, Google e Yahoo, per dirne solo alcune, la fanno da padrone. Ma se Apple puo' fare un telefono, la Nokia certo puo' fare il fornitore di servizi Internet... Nokia dovra' contare sull'enorme base di clienti che ha per convincerli ad abbandonare fotocamere, lettori mp3 e console portatili per usare un solo dispositivo, il quarto schermo.

Gli operatori non so come la prenderanno, visto che Nokia ha un po', diciamo, scavalcato il loro recinto. Ma ancora, se Vodafone si permette di vendere telefoni marchiati solo col suo brand, perche' Nokia non puo' entrare nei servizi?

E' la musica, il mio piu' grande cruccio. Pare che ci sia DRM. Bene, anzi male. Non voglio pagare per scaricare musica che poi non posso spostare nel lettore che voglio io. Ad esempio, in macchina io ascolto cd di mp3. Se scarico una canzone dal Nokia music store, DEVO poterla masterizzare su cd e sentirla in macchina. Se cosi' non e', per me e' una grossa pecca. Ma certo, chissa' come vanno gli accordi con le major musicali.

In definitiva pero' era una mossa da fare e sono sicuro che Nokia riuscira' a giocare bene le sue carte. Il futuro e' Internet, Internet mobile, e Nokia sta muvoendo i giusti passi. Gli Internet Tablets sono uno dei passi verso questa visione.

In the beginning was a screen, used by many people joined together to share emotions and experiences. The cinema. Then a second screen came, and it allowed us to connect to the rest of the world and even to other worlds. The television.

The third screen changed the way we live and work: Internet, the true revolution. Despite this, the Internet experience remained confined to private boundaries, until the fourth screen arrived, to change everything and forever. Internet can now be utilized everywhere and whenever, with anyone. The fourth screen belongs to the Nokia Multimedia Computers.

This is more or less the beginning of the press conference with which Nokia announced on the 29-08-2007 a drastic and hystorical revolution, the passage from a company that produces mainly hw products, to a company that also offers Internet services, such as monsters like Google or Yahoo. It is not a small change, it's something similar to when Nokia decided to abandon the production of cables, timber or rubber to solely concentrate on Telecommunications.

Nokia will launch its own web portal, Ovi, which means door in finnish. The name is proper, especially thinking that it's not easy at all to find a finnish word shorter than 34 letters, go figure 3... Ovi will be indeed the door to all the Internet services offered by Nokia. In detail, the first services offered will by the Nokia Music Store, which will allow to download music from a collection of millions of pieces everywhere and anytime using Nokia devices. Sync with an ad-hoc PC client and other bells and whistles are in. Think that the iTunes music store does not allow (for now) downloading music using a wireless device (read, iPod), but you are forced to use the iTunes PC client. Nokia a step ahead already...

Ovi will also offer a gaming platform service. It will be possible to download, obviously from a Nokia device equipped with a proper Java application games for S60 platform designed by specialized companies such as EA and its FIFA 2007, to try, rent or buy. In addition, extra services like statistics and on-line "the best players" charts.

What about it? I think it's difficult to enter a difficult business such as the Internet services, dominated by giants like Apple, Google and Yahoo, to name only a few. But if Apple can make a phone, Nokia sure can become a provider of Internet services... Nokia will count on the enourmous client base it has got, to convince them to abandone cameras, mp3 readers and portable gaming consoles to use only one device, the fourth screen.

And the operators, how will they like this, since Nokia is seemingly stepping on their turf? But again, if Vodafone can sell a Vodafone branded phone, why can't Nokia enter the services business?

Music is my biggest concern. Looks like songs are DRM protected. Well, or rather bad. I don't want to pay for music that I cannot later move into the device or medium I want. For example, I always listen to mp3 CDs in my car. If I download a song from the Nokia music store, I WANT to be able to burn a CD and listen to it also in my car. Not mentioning listening it from my HI-FI stereo at home. If this is not the case, for me it's a big minus. Surely, who knows how the agreement with the big music majors are, maybe Nokia could not simply sell DRM-free music...

To summarize, it was something to do and I'm sure that Nokia will be able to play its cards. Internet is the future, mobile Internet, and Nokia is going in the right direction. And the Internet Tablets are one step in this right direction.

New cool stuff for N800 - Novita' per l'N800

I'm spending this week in Birmingham, UK, where the Gnome Users and Developers European Conference (GUADEC) is being held. The conference is the occasion to meet many people that are behind the very same things I have been working with everyday, which is good.

The conference has been the occasion to introduce new things for the N800, which bring my (and that of my team's of course) direct contribution. We have in fact published the long awaited open source SIP connection manager!!! Now you can use N800 to call to other SIP numbers, and most importantly, PSTN numbers at cheap prices! And hold your breath, SIP also does video!!


In addition, you get other cool features like a refresh of UI, with updated features, like Gtalk avatars. Work on Gtalk has also been extended to support relay, so that the success rate of N800 - N800 calls can increase!

The release is "development version". It's still work in progress and you can try it taking this into account. At some point it will be included in Maemo 4.0 Chinook release. You can download the software and get other info from Garage. Many thanks to all those who made this possible with their bug efforts.

Additionally, a development version of Mozilla browser for N800 has been announced in GUADEC. Try it out as well, open source browser for an open source platform!

In questa settimana sono a Birmingham (ahime', piove sempre! Altro che Finlandia!) ad assistere al GUADEC, la Conferenza Europea per gli utenti e sviluppatori di Gnome. L'evento e' l'occasione di incontrare gente che conosci solo di nome e che hanno contribuito a sviluppare il software che viene utilizzato ogni giorno per migliorare gli Internet Tablets. Molto bello, tempo a parte.

Soprattutto, durante GUADEC sono state annunciate diverse novita' interessanti. Una che riguarda direttamente me e il mio team e' la pubblicazione on-line dell'Internet Communications Software Development version. La release contiene il tanto atteso open source SIP connection manager, che permette di effettuare chiamate ad altri utenti SIP ma soprattutto a numeri di rete telefonica a prezzi stracciati!!!

E udite udite, c'e' anche la possibilita' di video chiamate con SIP (testato solo fra due N800 per il momento), come la foto sopra mostra. Oltre a SIP, la release comprende migliorie alla UI, sia grafiche che in termini di caratteristiche, infatti ora avatars per GTalk sono supportati. Infine, supporto del relay per Gtalk e' stato aggiunto, cosi' che sara' piu' facile chiamare con GTalk fra due N800. Provatelo, divertitevi e date feedback!! Un grazie a tutti coloro che hanno contribuito.

Istruzioni e piu' dettagli su Garage. Il software, ancora in fase di sviluppo, e assolutamente non bug-free, sara' migliorato e fara' parte della release 4.0 Chinook di Maemo.

In aggiunta, e' stato anche annunciato il rilascio (sempre development version) del browser Mozilla per N800. Un browser open source per un device open source!!! Provatelo!

My second child - Il mio secondo figlio

I proudly announce that on the 6th of July I became father for the second time! Nokia has in fact announced the Internet Tablet OS 2007 edition feature upgrade release. This release, which can be downloaded for free by all the N800 owners, features several interesting updates:

1. Adobe Flash Player 9 browser plug-in
   
2. Up to 8Gb (SDHC) memory card support. And, since there are 2 memory slots, this adds up to 16GB of memory storage space
3. Use time and miscellaneous improvements

And let's rolls the drums...

Full fledged Skype client!!!

Skype is the thing I'd like to talk most, as it's where my efforts most concentrated. It is an almost full functional version of the desktop version, only video and conference call hosting is not functional. SkypeOut works like a beauty. I called my mother today after having bought credit directly from the device browser! You gotta buy it! Cheaper than any iPhone!

Annuncio con orgoglio che lo scorso venerdi 6 Luglio sono diventato papa' per la seconda volta. La Nokia ha infatti pubblicato la Internet Tablet OS 2007 edition feature upgrade release. Questa nuova versione del Sistema Operativo per l'N800, che i proprietari di N800 potranno installare gratuitamente, puo' contare su molte interessanti novita':

1. (Inutile la sorpresa, avete visto la foto) Skype client, full-optional!!!
2. Flash 9 per il browser
3. Supporto per schede di memoria fino a 8Gb (e visto che ci sono due slot, la memoria viene estesa fino a 16Gb, non male affatto)
4. Miglioramenti della durata della batteria e altri generali migliorie

Skype e' la parte dove io ho lavorato particolarmente. Il client e' un piccolo gioiellino, ed e' completamente simile in funzionalita' ad un desktop client, eccetto la video chiamata e la possibilita' di ospitare conference calls. Chiamate a numeri di telefono con SkypeOut funzionano che e' una meraviglia. Ho appena acquistato dal browser del device credito Skype e chiamato mia madre al telefono fisso. Accatativillo! Altro che iPhone! E' anche molto meno caro!

On the Nokia Internet Invitation

I keep on receiving random requests of authorization from random people. This is not how the invitation is supposed to be used! People should get authorized by some friend with an N800, not by me! I posted the link to my invitation web page for my friends to connect to me!
So, if you want to use this feature, get an invitation from a friend with an N800, and start calling! The client would not work anyway unless it talks with an N800.

Video Call with Nokia N800

So, let's talk a bit about video calling with the Nokia N800. Nokia N800 is compatible with the GoogleTalk service, and extends it by adding video call capabilities to it over the XMPP protocol. Now, there are two ways you can have a video call: the first is calling a friend with another N800.
You have been a quick purchaser and don't know anyone with a Nokia N800? No problem, you can still video call by using a dedicated application for windows PC that Nokia has developed to allow video calling PC users from your Nokia N800!

Using the feature, enabled with a software update already available for download: 2.2006.51-6, is very simple:

1. You must first create an account in the dedicated server by tapping the contacts icon and selecting "Send call invitation".
   
2. Just input your preferred nickname you want to use for the feature and that's it: account created
3. Invite any of your friends following the instructions

Your friends will receive the invitation, which will redirect them to a web page, containing the instructions to download the software. The web page looks like:



After the installation and authorization to see each other presence video (or audio only) calls can start! This feature is in development progress, you can contribute with your suggestion to improve it to make it even better!!

Nokia N800

At last my baby is born! Today Nokia announced its Internet Tablet Nokia N800, which contains my blood and months of hard work. Later on for more details and a better picture. And take a look at the picture: you can video call over the Internet, and that's where I have worked.

E finalmente il mio figlioletto e' nato! Oggi Nokia ha annunciato il suo Internet Tablet Nokia N800, che raccoglie il mio sangue e mesi di duro lavoro. A piu' tardi per piu' dettagli e una foto migliore. E notate la foto: si puo' video-chiamare su Internet ed e' su questo che ho lavorato io!

Io e il mio device

I have promised to write a post about my device. Better, about my work, which incidentally entails working with the device. In Nokia, I work in the group that produces the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet, which you can see pictured below, thanks to Andrea's kind concession (yes, I am too lazy to get a different picture somewhere else).

Ho promesso tempo fa che avrei scritto un post sul mio device. O meglio, sul mio lavoro, che casualmente comporta di lavorare col device. In Nokia, lavoro nel gruppo che produce l'Internet Tablet Nokia 770, che vedete riprodotto qui sotto, foto gentile concessione di Andrea cosi' facciamo a paro con la mia sulle pulla.

I love this wonderful toy, and I really think that it can be the future of communication. What I use to say is that cellular phones made telephony mobile, enabling people to call anywhere and anytime (in Finland this is particularly true since there is coverage everywhere, from a metro tunnel to a cottage in the middle of a Lapland forrest). Well, this device is the first step to make Internet communication truly ubiquitous. This family of devices will allow people to use Internet anytime and anywhere.

A me questo meraviglioso giocattolo fa impazzire, e sono davvero convinto che possa essere il futuro della comunicazione. Io dico in genere che come i telefoni cellulari hanno reso la telefonia mobile, permettendo alla gente di comunicate dovunque e comunque (questo e' particolarmente vero in Finlandia, dove c'e' copertura dovunque, dalla metropolitana a un cottage nel mezzo di una foresta lappone). Ebbene, questo device e' il primo passo per rendere la comunicazione via Internet davvero "pervasiva" dovunque, comunque e a qualsiasi ora. Questa famiglia di dispositivi permettera alla gente di usare Internet dove pare e piace a loro!!!



I feel proud to be part of such an ambitious project, it feels good to see that people are using something that you have contributed to create! I put myself in the shoes of the Symbian guys, and I can see what they think when they see people using their phones! :-)
But, what do I do exactly for this device? Now, and jokes with Andrea's picture besides, look at the picture above, which I have chosen not casually: it's Google Talk, it's voip, instant messaging and I have worked in the team that has ported a Gtalk compatible client in the device. It's great to lay down in bed and gtalk with friends and my parents, possibly while browsing Internet using the commodity of a great display in such a lightweight device! Try to do this with your laptop and come tell me after... Of course, this post has been written from the device itself.

Sono orgoglioso di essere parte di questo ambizioso progetto, ed e' bello vedere le persone usare qualcosa che tu hai contribuito a creare! Mi metto nei panni dei ragazzi che lavorano con Symbian, e immagino come si possano sentire quando vedono la gente telefonare con i loro "figlioletti"! :-)
Ma, cosa faccio esattamente per questo device? Ora, e scherzi a parte con la foto di Andrea, ecco perche' ho scelto questa. Guardate la foto: e' Google Talk, e' voip, chat e io lavoro nel team che ha portato Gtalk sul device. E' grande stare sdraiati sul letto e parlare con amici o con i miei genitori, possibilmente navigando su internet allo stesso tempo usando il fantastico display del device, racchiuso in si' leggera cervice (si, mi sono lasciato trasportare poeticamente, e dovevo trovare una rima...)! Cercate di fare una cosa simile (parlare e navigare intendo, non rimare) col vostro laptop e poi venitemi a raccontare come vi sentite dopo... Chiaramente, questo post e' stato scritto dal device.
