No, it is not the score of the last basketball match between Italy and Finland, but the score obtained by the two countries in the latest comparison on quality of life. The scores mean that Italy ranks a good 8th place, ascending two positions compared to last year, while Finland must go with a 16th place. The list is topped by France for the second year in a row.
The list has been compiled by International Living, a US travel magazine, using more or less official sources for each of the parameters taken into consideration. Disclaimer: translating freely from italian, all these comparisons leave the time they find, i.e., they are not to be blindly trusted. Nevertheless, let's have fun and analyze the scores of my two "mother" countries (natural and adoptive) side by side.
The first parameter, cost of life, bends clearly and expectdly in favour of Italy. Finland is a too small country, where there cannot be a competitive environment because there are not enough inhabitants. Everything is almost monopolized, and life in small town is almost as expensive as in Helsinki. Ah, let's not forget: VAT 17% on food. To be denounced to UNO...
Leisure and Culture are again once again for Italy. I think there are little doubts about that, which nations can boast the variety of environment and lesiure possibility as Italy, and especially, have a cultural history as Italy? Be it the Romans, the middle age with Dante, Raffaello and friends painters, Michelangelo and man, Leonardo, Galilei, Fermi and I stop here, we can say that there was no game from this point of view (and not only for Finland, but for many others).
Economy: meant as competitiveness, public debt and similar factors. Finland easily outperforms Italy here. And I have to say, there are no doubts about this either. Finnish economy is currently among the healtiest in the whole world, if not the number one. Italy? Well, let's pass to the next topic...
Environment: this is a tie, and I cannot say more as I have not understood myself what this is about. Sure, if environment means "natural" environment, on one side Finland can boast a much more incontaminated and clean environment than Italy, with all its lakes and forests, even in the cities. On the other hand, this can be sometimes "boring", and it's always the same! Italy presents a substantial variety of environments, mountains, lakes, sea, islands, archipelagos, volcanos. A tie is ok.
Freedom is the maximum for both. But, freedom of what? Press? Speech? Come on, we are western countries. Let's not even dispute it!
Health: Italy wins by a small margin. I do agree, difference could be even more. Life expetancy in Italy is higher than Finland (as a matter of fact, one of the highest in Europe), the mediterranean diet surely contibutes to healtier life-style of italians. And italian healt care system is in my opinion better than Finnish one, as you always have the personal doctor ready to help you, even at home, and don't need to pass through the censorship of a nurse who will tell you lay down and drink something hot no matter what you have before letting you to see the kin, ehm, the doctor. Ah, shall we forget that if you live in Helsinki and get sick somewhere else you'd better go to the church and pray rather than to the hospital, cause they won't cure you otherwise?
Infrastructure is a bit better in Finland than Italy. I have no data to dispute the opposite, so be it. It's not like in either place roads are missing...
For risk and safety both score 100. Well, Italy won't be Iraq, but I do feel safer in Finland than Italy. I wouldn't say in my small and beloved Ragusa, but shall we compare the capitals? Come on! If in Italy you'd call the police to stop a drunk party they'd rather arrest you for interference with public service and for wasting their time. In Finland, the most dangerous operation a policeman can do is collecting drunkards from the road...
Climate 85 -69. Do I need to say more?
That's all. Funnily, somewhat important parameters such as education, social services are not counted. I wonder how things would have gone if such parameters would have been taken into account...
No, non e' il risultato dell'ultimo incontro di basket fra le due nazioni, ma i punteggi ottenuti in un recente sondaggio sulla qualita' della vita condotto da una rivista di viaggi americana (fonte autorevole, eh?), International Living. In base a questi risultati, l'Italia si piazza buona ottava, in rialzo di due dall'anno scorso, mentre la Finlandia si deve accontentare del sedicesimo posto, in picchiata di ben sette posizioni rispetto all'anno scorso. Per il secondo anno di fila, la classifica e' condotta dalla Francia, checche' ne pensino gli immigrati e i disoccupati che ne mettono le citta' a ferro e fuoco.
Divertiamoci un po' a commentare i parametri che compongono la classifica, per entrambe le mie patrie, quella naturale con la P maiuscola e quella adottiva. Avvertenza, queste classifiche lasciano il tempo che trovano, quindi si prenda questa discussione come un gioco. I parametri sono riportati sopra nella parte inglese.
Il costo della vita, uno dei nostri migliori giocatori, ci porta avanti con una serie di triple. La Finlandia e' un paese troppo piccolo, dove non c'e' un numero abbastanza elevato di abitanti per sviluppare un'economia competitiva. Per qualsiasi cosa, quindi, il fornitore ha quasi il monopolio e quindi fa quello che vuole con i prezzi. Ah, e non scordiamoci dell'IVA del 17% (!) sui beni di prima necessita', che e' cosa da denuncia all'ONU...
In tempo libero e cultura ci difendiamo ancora una volta bene e sopravanziamo la Finlandia. Beh, penso che sopravanzeremmo chiunque. Chi puo' vantare una storia culturale come l'Italia? Dai Romani a Dante, passando per Raffaello e amici pittori, Michelangelo e il genio Leonardo, Galileo, Fermi e chi piu' ne ha piu' ne metta.
L'economia ci vede in netta difficolta'. Beh, poco da dire qui, la Finlandia ha una delle economie piu' competitive nel mondo, se non la piu' competitiva. E l'Italia? Beh, stendiamo un velo pietoso...
L'ambiente fornisce un pareggio. Ma che significa ambiente? Naturale, economico, sociale, culturale? Bene, prendiamo quello naturale. Un pareggio qui mi pare giusto, visto che sebbene la Finlandia possa vantare un ambiente meno inquinato, incontaminato, con foreste e laghi persino nelle citta', alla fine si puo' dire che e' un po', monotono... L'Italia d'altro canto, ha una varieta' che poche nazioni al mondo possono vantare: laghi, foreste, montagne, e certamente mare, arcipelaghi, vulcani.
Liberta'. Ma liberta' de che? Stampa, parola, religione? In ogni caso, siamo due paesi occidentali, nessun motivo di ottenere meno che il massimo.
L'indicatore sulla salute ci vede leggermente in vantaggio. E sono d'accordo, ci va anche stretto. L'aspettativa di vita in Italia e' piu' alta che in Finlandia, e in verita', e' una delle piu' alte nel mondo. A questo contribuisce senza dubbio la dieta mediterranea, che e' molto salutare e purtroppo abbastanza sconosciuta nel paese delle salsine e del pane imburrato. E vogliamo parlare della sanita' pubblica? In Italia hai il medico di famiglia pronto ad accorrere fino a casa se occorre, quando in Finlandia devi muoverti tu anche con 40 di febbre e -20 di temperatura. Non contenti, prima di vedere un medico in Finlandia devi passare dalla censura dell'infermiera, che qualsiasi cosa abbia ti rimanda a casa a letto e a bere qualcosa di caldo. Solo se sei quasi in fin di vita, ti ammettera' alla presenze di sua maes.., ehm del dottore. Senza contare che sei abiti a Helsinki e ti senti male altrove sei fottuto! Non ti curano, perche' lo devono fare nel tuo comune di residenza!
L'indice sulle infrastrutture vede la Finlandia in leggero vantaggio. Non avendo dati, non commento. Passi pure.
Entrambi si beccano un bel massimo sulla sicurezza. Ora, e' chiaro che se compari Italia, Finlandia e Iraq, questo va bene. Ma vuoi mettere Helsinki dove le ragazze tornano tranquillamente a casa alle 4.00 di notte dopo la discoteca e il peggio che puo' loro capitare e' essere attraccate da qualche italiano di passaggio? Proviamo lo stesso in Italia? Proviamo a vivere senza porte blindate in ogni casa in Italia?

E questo e' tutto, se volete saperlo, questa classifica e' molto opinabile a mio parere. Almeno, mi ha dato spunto per riempire il mio blog, che ultimamente languiva di argomenti, figlioletto a parte. Ad esempio, non trovo nella classifica parametri di una certa importanza come educazione e servizi sociali, tanto per fare un esempio. E chissa' come sarebbe la storia se loro fossero stati presi in considerazione.

Beh, le sol facto que le classifica premia le Francia demonstra clarmente que illo ha nulle credibilitate.
E il manca un parametro essential: le cocina!
Quanto al comparation inter Italia e Finlandia, io crede que le valutation del infrastructuras es errate; si nos considera le transporto public, le policia, le servicios de manutention stratal, etc., nos debe conceder al Finlandia le maxime voto, e al Italia, mmm... io non parla! :-)
